In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi has expressed his support for an indefinite US troop presence in Iraq.

The Prime Minister’s comments come amid increasing tensions between the US and Iran, as well as the ongoing US-led fight against ISIS in Iraq and Syria. As a result, the US has kept a significant military presence in the country, which has become increasingly controversial due to Iraq’s sovereignty.

Kadhimi stated in the interview that he “understands the need for the US presence in Iraq” and that it is “essential for the security of Iraq and the region.” He went on to say that the US troops provide “very important support” to the Iraqi army and security forces and that he is “very appreciative of the US commitment to security in Iraq.”

Kadhimi’s remarks come at a time when many Iraqis are becoming increasingly frustrated with the US military presence in the country. Many feel that the US presence has been a hindrance to Iraq’s sovereignty and that the US should not be allowed to have a perpetual presence in the country.

Despite this, Kadhimi has stated that the US military presence is “critical” and “vital” to Iraq’s security. He has also expressed his support for the US-led coalition against ISIS, stating that the US has “played an enormous role” in the fight against the terror group and that the US should remain in Iraq until the threat from ISIS is eliminated.

Kadhimi’s comments come as a welcome surprise to many who have been critical of the US presence in Iraq. While the Prime Minister’s support for an indefinite US troop presence in Iraq may be controversial, it is clear that he understands the importance of the US’s role in the region and the need for a continued presence in order to ensure Iraq’s security. As Iraq continues to grapple with the ongoing security threats from ISIS and other terror groups, the US military presence in the country will be essential to maintaining the stability of the region.
